Mull Wind Farms, likely impact on tourism Report commissioned by M.I.C.T Interim Economic Impact report -" It was important to stress the positive effects there would be to the Mull economy" yet there is no mention of the potential negative impact on the economy of Mull. Minutes of 8th March 05, Dervaig Steering Group. |
As a result of last year’s public consultation, Argyll & Bute Council’s Finalised Draft local plan has identified Mull as a constrained area for windfarms. Mull is therefore considered to be an area that is essentially incompatible with commercial windfarm development ( 4 or more turbines). The plan supports Community Windfarms but defines them as : Community Windfarms of 3 or less and individual domestic wind turbines. The Draft Plan was available to view until the 15 July. We support LP REN 1, 2 and 3 but with conditions. Please contact us if you require more information There are 37 golden eagle territories on the Isle of Mull with 18 breeding pairs. This makes the Isle of Mull one of the densest populated areas in Europe for Golden Eagles.
Mull has the highest percentage of the UK's population of white-tailed
sea eagles. The UK population of sea eagles currently stands at around
30 pairs. Windfarms are incompatible with eagles due to the risk from turbine blade strikes. Some turbine blades weigh up to 1.5 tonnes and their tips are traveling at 180 mph. |
